Irrigation History

Ancient Sumerian irriga- tion engineers had the task of channeling water from the rivers during the summer, impounding it, and distributing it to the fields in small install- ments. Their irrigation system eventually broke down because it led to an accumulation of salt in the soil, with a conse- quent loss of fertility.
