Irrigation Facts

The incidents of malaria have been dramatically reduced in most of the Sichuan Province of China due mainly to changes in farming and irrigation methods. Rice paddy fields that had been left flooded year- round, including during times when rice is not grown, are now under an annual cycle of wet crop/dry crop rotation. This is thanks to crop management systems first introduced in 1990, which provided new reservoirs and irrigation systems to the area, enabling farmers to grow a second crop of wheat or vegetables, whereas, before, rice was their only crop. Because these fields are being annually drained of their water, populations of malaria- carrying mosquitos, which breed prolifically in rice paddy fields, have fallen substantially.
